As Summer unfolds, what better way is there to enjoy the weather than by opening your windows? Double-hung windows are great for enjoying the weather, but don’t forget to securely lock them when you’re done soaking up the fresh air. This guide explores the simple steps to make sure your double-hung windows are working safely and effectively.

  1. Listen for the Click
    • Double Hung windows make a satisfying click when they are fully closed. As the sashes meet, listen for that distinct click that means your window is secure and your sashes are aligned.
  2.  Inspect Your Locks
    • When your windows are closed, take a moment to inspect the lock. Each lock should align perfectly with its counterpart on the opposite sash. Misalignment compromises the security of the window. The good news is that it can usually be fixed by gently adjusting the sashes until the locks are aligned. You’ll want to test that both sashes are able to lock while open and closed. To do this, simply open each sash and lock it into place. Check that the sash remains secure in this position. You don’t want to risk sudden closures or misalignment. When that’s done, close each one and make sure it locks in the lowered position as well.
  3. Apply Light Pressure
    • When your windows are locked, press lightly on each sash to confirm the locks are properly engaged. There should be no gaps between the sashes. Avoid using excessive force, as that could damage the window.
  4. Regular Maintenance
    • An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Make sure to regularly clean your tracks, lubricate the hardware, and inspect for any signs of damage. Addressing minor issues early on can save you the headache of major issues down the road.
